This beautiful gold iris locket is an absolute feat of engineering, hand-forged by Emily Butterly as part of our Encapsulation Exhibition.
Emily is one of our in-house jewellers. She creates her jewellery collections under her name, you can find more of her work in our gallery.
The inspiration for this locket came to her in a dream. Her vision was of one of the most fantastical objects in literature, the Alethiometer from Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’, a compass like tool which translates to truth-meter. Combining that inspiration with the iris mechanism of a camera, her gold iris locket was created.
The camera iris mechanism works by moving a tab left to right reveal a beautiful 2.7mm diamond and circle motif.
Traditional hand forging techniques along with modern laser welding were used to create the gold iris locket.
Elements made from sterling silver are the back motif, iris mechanism, handmade clasp and front panel. The 21″ box chain is also made in sterling silver.
Contrasting the silver are the sections made from 18ct yellow gold; the diamond setting, rivets, bail and locket frame.
The locket measures 21mm in diameter, with the total length of the pendant being 30mm.
To see Emily Butterly’s locket and the other designers taking part in our Encapsulation Exhibition, we invite you to visit our Clifton Gallery. The exhibition is on until 19th September 2026.
