This unique repurposed tin locket brooch has been created by talented jeweller Jo Pond, which is being shown as part of our Encapsulation Exhibition.
The tin locket brooch has been made from a old found tin for Talkie Needles used to play records on gramophones back in the 1920s-30s, the piece also includes an excerpt from the designers Grandmother’s diary, which she writes of visiting the pictures to see two films. Each piece Jo creates tells us a story and relationship between the objects.
Her jewellery practice involves the use of found objects, which Jo uses to tell a new story through each piece of jewellery, a few of which can be seen in our Encapsulation Exhibition.
She discovered a passion for collecting through her family where hoarding runs in the genes, describing her passion for collecting objects as an inescapable need to hoard. Using a metal detector to find forgotten treasures and with her exceptional ability and skill, Jo reworks these found objects back into beautiful pieces of jewellery. Each object is treated with love and care and turned into a necklace, a pair of earrings, a bracelet, each being given a new life with signs of wear and use taking centre stage. From old pieces of jewellery, tobacco tins and cookware Jo’s work is a beautiful mix of unloved and unearthed treasures. Jo is also an established fine jeweller and creates beautiful pieces in precious metals and gemstones.
