Spring Showcase – An Interview with Guest Designer DeeLyn

Here is our final instalment in our Spring Showcase guest jeweller interviews. We have loved getting to know the designers behind the jewellery, their routines, their workspaces and why they decided to become jewellers. These interviews have given us lovely insights and we’d like to say thank you again to our three designers DeeLyn, Rhianna Lewis and Lucy Thompson for taking the time to answer our questions in their busy work and life schedules.

With that, we would like to introduce you to our Spring Showcase, guest designer DeeLyn:

Please could you give us a brief introduction to your work and who you are?

Hiya, I’m DeeLyn, the designer/maker/do everythinger behind DeeLyn::Design. My work heavily influence by architecture and all things geometric. I love a big bold statement piece. I am based in Liverpool, via Portland  OR, but I’ve earned honorary scouser status after being here 20 years now! I used to restore wood on sailboats and came here for a design degree as a mature student. The course had a woodworking as specialisation, but that department got cut my first year.

What led you to become a jeweller and how did you train/ learn your skills?

As mentioned, I did a design degree. When the wood department got the axe, I had already fallen for metal so it was an easy transition. I graduated from Liverpool Hope Uni in 2010, specialising in metal and ceramics. Although I was making jewellery, the course was not a jewellery course. I’ve been practicing ever since whilst expanding my jewellery tool box.

We love to hear about people’s workspaces- please could you describe where you work?

I L.O.V.E. my studio! I am so fortunate to have a large space on the edge of the city centre. It’s four 10ft windows flood the room with light (although the greenhouse effect can be a bit much!). Early on I discovered that working from home is NOT for me. It’s my happy place! Have a peek (it’s NOT usually this clean btw)!

What are the areas of your business that you enjoy the most?

Designing. I delight in the process of taking a sculptural form, tweaking it until it’s wearable and if I can also make it multifunctional or wearable in multiple ways I am one happy designer.

What does a usual work day look like for you?

Balance, what’s that?!… I’m a full time self employed artist! 😜
But, I do try to work normal work hours in the studio (unless a deadline is looming) so I can be home with my daughter in the evenings. And then all the boring admin is done in the wee hours.

What are you looking forward to most during Spring and in the run up to Summer?

Sunshine, glorious sunshine! 🌞 I’m am writing this from the corner of my garden that gets morning light. But I’m also planning a photoshoot for the new Inversible collection, and have 2 collabs in the works with other artists which are pretty exciting.  Stay tuned!
Thank you DeeLyn for taking the time to answer all of our questions. DeeLyn’s work will be on display until 29th June 2024 so please pop in to the shop to see DeeLyn’s full collection and a selection in our online shop
