Jacks is currently showing a new collection of work in our Winter Showcase and has kindly answered our designer Q + A. We hope you enjoy reading Jacks’ answers and learning a bit more about Jacks’ workspace, daily routines, jewellery training and trusty workshop companion.

Jacks Turner

1 – Please could you give us a brief introduction to your work and who you are? (Where are you based, inspirations, fun facts)

Hi, I’m Jacks a jewellery designer based in the wonderful City of Bristol. I’ve been working within the jewellery industry for over 30 years.

My jewellery is distinguished by an organic-meets-geometric aesthetic, drawing inspiration from elements in the natural world such as the rugged Côtes-d’Armor landscape in Northern France, where I spend my summers. I work with singular and characterful gemstones, including salt-and-pepper diamonds, one-of-a-kind gemstone cuts and unusual coloured stones. Hand-applied textures and hand-carved, faceted forms have become my signature, seen in collections such as ‘Le Lac’ and ‘Geo’, which recalls natural rock formations.
Narratives behind each collection capture themes of love, travel and the natural world, giving each piece an individual and often romantic story. The organic and bohemian aesthetic is balanced by meticulous attention to detail and high quality craftsmanship, creating future-heirloom fine jewellery that feels deeply personal.

2 – What led you to become a jeweller and how did you train/ learn your skills?

At a very young age I was always drawn to crafting, having a brain that worked well in 3D this was the natural course for my career. So I knew pursuing the arts straight from school was the right path for me.
Jacks Turner, my eponymous business, was launched after an already diverse career in the jewellery industry. I have been making jewellery since 1991, after graduating from Birmingham School of Jewellery. My skills were honed as a bench jeweller and workshop manager for a well known Bristol jewellery designer, where I worked for eight years. During this time I gained experience in stone setting, quality control and bespoke design consultations.

Throughout my career, I have taken multiple opportunities to advance my skills and refine my craft, including specialist short courses in CAD, platinum work, advanced jewellery-making techniques, and stone setting. I have embraced new technologies and processes, now integrating CAD alongside traditional handcrafting techniques. Stone setting is a key skill I really enjoy. I have sought to develop and hone this technical skill throughout my career, incorporating gemstone accents throughout my jewellery collections.

3 – We love to hear about people’s workspaces- please could you describe where you work? (and introduce any workshop pets!) 

I work from my modest jewellery workshop in the heart of Bristol. Although my workspace is compact and bijou, it’s equipped with all the essential tools to help me craft, remodel and design my collections of fine contemporary jewellery.

My space is intentionally light and airy to help me to function with a clear and calm work approach. I’ve surrounded myself with lush green planting to create a cosy indoors outdoors vibe. I try to keep it as organise as possible, not always possible in a busy working week.

Thankfully on customer consultation days a quick blitz keeps the workshop in a presentable space.

My workshop companion Hector Hound is always with me, greeting customers and happily dreaming the day away. He is a welcome distraction when work gets busy or challenging.

4 – What are the areas of your business that you enjoy the most?

The absolute favourite part of my business is the jewellery making and designing itself—I refuse to hand this over! It’s the core creative process I enjoy the most. If I can outsource a task or find someone who does it better, I will, but the creation itself stays with me.

Beyond the benchwork, I get a huge amount of joy from connecting with my customers. Jewellery, for me, is all about forging a link—a tangible reminder of a special moment or feeling. I love knowing that I can design a piece that evokes a cherished memory.

I also really enjoy the whole process of finding inspiration in the landscapes around me, adding a heartfelt sentiment, and then crafting something timeless. Knowing I’m using responsibly sourced materials and designing for longevity means these pieces aren’t just fashionable; they’re becoming heirlooms for the next generation. It’s rewarding to put that foresight and passion for precision into every single creation.

5 – What does a usual work day look like for you? (Do you work full- time/ part-time, how do you balance your week?) 

I work full-time from my jewellery workshop located in the heart of Bristol.
My weeks are quite varied, and I manage a varied range of responsibilities. My core activities include jewellery making, designing bespoke pieces, consulting with customers, preparing quotes for new commissions, placing material orders, handling bookkeeping and accounts, and managing PR.

Each morning, I begin my day with a coffee in my favourite tiny cup, which helps me focus on prioritising the tasks ahead. Once organised, I dedicate time to responding to customer emails before diving into my list of pending jobs. This structured approach allows me to effectively juggle the many aspects of my jewellery business and ensure that each order or bespoke commission receives the attention it deserves.

6 – What are you looking forward to most during Autumn and in the run up to Winter and Christmas?

I’m a Spring baby so Autumn is not my favourite time of year, I muddle through the dark evenings with lots outdoors walks and cosy movie nights. Although when the weather is slightly bleak I’m more inclined to stay longer in the workshop, which gets more work done.
